Building Production-Grade Next.js 14 Apps in 2025
Why App Router changes everything
Next.js 14's App Router isn't just a new routing paradigm — it fundamentally changes how you think about data fetching, rendering, and component architecture. After shipping 12 projects on the App Router, here's what we've learned.
Server Components first
The default in App Router is Server Components. Every component is server-rendered unless you explicitly opt into client-side interactivity with "use client". Zero JS shipped for static content, direct database queries in components, and secrets stay on the server.
Suspense boundaries are not optional
Wrap every async data fetch in a Suspense boundary with a meaningful skeleton. Without it, a slow database query blocks the entire page render.
Caching strategy
Use fetch with explicit cache options: force-cache for static content, revalidate for periodic freshness, no-store for real-time data.
Route groups for layout isolation
Use route groups to share layouts without adding to the URL path — the cleanest way to build a marketing site plus dashboard inside one Next.js app.
